SKOWHEGAN – A century ago, this elegant mansion was the home of renowned violinist Mary Elise Fellows White, the “Maine Prodigy.” It will be sold at auction later this month (please see details below).
Dated to c. 1840, and sitting directly opposite Coburn Park, the 13-room Greek Revival gem today retains its essential character throughout, much like the panels one sees gracing almost every room. The exceptions are fortunate updates, such as the six-burner Viking Professional gas stove with hood in the huge, dine-in kitchen; or the master suite’s bathroom, which has both a shower enclosure and a Kohler jetted tub.
There is an inground pool, too, in a patio area overlooked by both the brick-floored, three-season, west-wing sun porch, and a row of French doors in the kitchen.
Period details are everywhere. There are several stunning chandeliers, and four brick-and-tile fireplaces: in the columned living room, the front parlor, the master bedroom, and the back bedroom – note its herringbone-pattern maple flooring, which is also a feature of the dining room as is a built-in buffet. Both the parlor and the dining room have lovely leaded-glass built-ins; the vestibule has leaded-glass lights, sidelights and transom.
Back, “breakfast stairs” and a handsome main staircase – note its hand-turned balusters, and the stained-glass window on the landing – ascend to the four-bedroom, two-bath second floor. The walkup attic is unfinished, but provides great storage. The two-level carriage house, which is accessed via the laundry room behind the kitchen, has a garage bay and several rooms, including an office and a large recreation room with a wood stove.
The 4,414-square foot home on 1.41 acres at 400 Water St., Skowhegan, will be sold by public auction, on-site, at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Please note that a preview will be held from 2:30-3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
