GARDINER — A city man was arrested Thursday night on a charge of robbery in connection with a hold-up at a Big Apple convenience store last week.

Joshua Brown, 37, was arrested by Gardiner Police at about 9 p.m. and was being held Friday on $40,000 bail at the Kennebec County jail in Augusta.
Brown was arrested at a Highland Avenue residence in connection with the armed robbery of the store at 65 Brunswick Ave., which was reported Nov. 10 at about 10:30 p.m.
James Toman, chief of the Gardiner Police Department, did not specify how Brown was identified as a suspect in the robbery except to say in a news release that police wanted to “thank the citizens that came forward and provided critical information during the course of our investigation.”
Gardiner Officer Sean Dixon “did a tremendous job as the lead investigator,” Toman said, adding that assistance was also provided by Maine State Police, Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office and the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.
A clerk at the Big Apple store had called police to say she had just been robbed by a man who pointed a gun at her and demanded money. The clerk gave the man an undisclosed amount of money and he fled on foot, appearing to head toward the downtown area, police said at the time.
A security camera photograph showed the suspect wearing a blue or gray “Maine” sweatshirt, tan pants and a white surgical mask.
