Part of Winthrop Street in Hallowell will close next week for a large culvert replacement just west of Whitten Road, blocking a route there for people coming from Manchester.
The project will close a short stretch between Whitten and Town Farm roads on Monday, Aug. 24, said Shawn Smith, project manager for the Maine Department of Transportation. It’s expected to last through the work week, and the road should reopen on Aug. 28.
On Monday, the transportation department corrected information about the road closure’s scope that was given to the Kennebec Journal last week. Drivers coming from Manchester who normally use Granite Hill Road to get to Whitten Road can instead use Western Avenue, while drivers who typically use Winthrop Street to get to Manchester can use Central Street and Town Farm Road.
The work will close a portion of road between Downeast Energy and Woodlands Senior Living of Hallowell. McGee Construction of West Gardiner was awarded the project in July with a bid of nearly $160,000 for the job.
