George W. Maxwell Jr.

PORTLAND – George W. Maxwell Jr., 61, a resident of Gardiner, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021, of heart complications at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born on Nov. 25, 1959, in Lewiston, the son of George W. Maxwell Sr. and Lorretta M. (Hutchins) Maxwell. He was a 1978 graduate of Livermore Falls High School. After school George joined the United States Air Force and served for 24 years before retiring.

George enjoyed playing sports, especially football, and was a star athlete in high school and continued to excel in football after joining the Air Force.

On May 9, 1981, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay, he married the love of his life, Mary Brochu. George always put family first. He enjoyed the outdoors, watching sports, reading, and had a passion for music and history. He was notoriously goofy and loved to make others laugh.

He is survived by his mother, Lorretta Maxwell of Famington; wife, Mary Maxwell of Gardiner; their children Melissa Scheetz and husband Michael of Canton, Ga., Amy Pieretti and husband Michael of Pensacola, Fla., George Maxwell III and wife Kelsey of Vassalboro, Gregory Maxwell of Portland, Michael Maxwell and fiancé Chantel of Farmingdale, Joshua Maxwell of Randolph, Kathy Maxwell of Farmingdale, John Maxwell and fiancé Haylee of Gardiner, Heidi Maxwell of Gardiner, and Christopher Maxwell of Gardiner; 18 grandchildren; his brothers Timothy Maxwell and wife Darlene of Manchester, and Tony Maxwell of Livermore Falls, his sister, Tina Labbe and husband Peter of Jay; and many aunts, uncles; cousins; nieces, and nephews.

He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Barbara Joan Maxwell; his father, George Sr.; and his in-laws, Francis, and Barbara Joan Brochu.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 3, at St. Rose of Lima Church, 1 Church St., Jay. Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 2, at FINLEY FUNERAL HOME, 15 Church St., Livermore Falls. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, 445 Park St., Livermore Falls.
