ANSON – Alan H. Nelson, Sr. 79, passed away peacefully on Nov. 17, 2021. Alan was born in Anson, Maine on March 11, 1942. He was the youngest of 12 children born to LeBarron and Bertha (Smith) Nelson.
Alan was raised in Anson and attended Anson schools as a child. He later attended the University of Maine in Augusta. Alan spent several years in Southern California raising his family and working for McDonnell Douglas, Beckman Instruments and the Orange County Register. He enjoyed traveling. The family drove across country in Alan’s customized Ford van a few times before Alan decided it made sense to move the family back to Maine. Alan enjoyed working in his yard, as well as completing home improvement projects. He was a lover of both local and National politics and could spend hours conversing/debating with both Republicans and Democrats alike. He had a love for the Boston Red Sox and reading, especially Civil War books. Alan was a lover of small dogs, and over the years he shared his home with his beloved pets; he often made a spot in his favorite chair or on his bed for his dogs – most recently his Lhasa Apso, Ernie. He also enjoyed being in the woods and fishing for trout with his sons.
Alan was predeceased by his son, Christopher K. Nelson. He is survived by his wife, Sheila of Anson; daughters, Laurie (Sean) Knight of Anson; Darcy (Scott) Newell of San Marcos, Calif.; Alicia (Timothy) Driskill of Huntsville, Ala; Melissa (Brad) Zinkovitch of North Anson and sons, Alan H. (DJ) Nelson, Jr. of Riverview, Fla.; Bryan Nelson of Skowhegan; Jeremy Nelson of Anson, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Alan will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
