MERCER — Voters at Mercer’s annual Town Meeting on Saturday approved an $851,119 municipal budget that is not expected to increase the town’s property tax rate of $17.60 per $1,000 of assessed value.

“Last year, we had roughly $1.5 million in new valuation and we were able to hold to $17.60 mils,” Town Clerk Nancy Gove said Sunday. “I think this year we’ll be able to hold to that, too.”

About 70 voters turned out for the meeting, which lasted almost three hours, Gove said.

Residents rejected requests to disband Mercer Rescue and to continue giving a 2% discount on early payment of taxes. Selectmen recommended the discount offer end because it cost the town money last year.

“Last year, the town lost $15,777 for that discount,” Gove said.

Voters also rejected a request by a resident to prohibit former elected officials, employees or subcontractors who do not complete a term from running for any town position for a period of 10 years. A motion to amend that period to two years failed.

Voters supported putting away money to pay for a revaluation that could come in two or three years, according to Gove.
