I read with interest and agreement the Dec. 13 Maine Compass in today’s Morning Sentinel (“Maine Voices: Trail networks, while popular, aren’t for everybody“). The writer happens to be a relative, but this is not a topic we have discussed. Perhaps, as Mat suggested, we who prefer rails over trails should find a voice.
Railroads carry people and materials more efficiently than roads, and at a smaller cost to the environment. Most developed countries have a good passenger rail system, but we do not. Once the rails are gone, we’ll never get them back.
