SMITHFIELD – Vincent John Scannell, 79, of Smithfield, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on June 12, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on Sept. 14, 1943, in Ottawa, Ill., to Vincent Francis Scannell and Mary Catherine (McMahon), Vince led an adventurous life, including time in Chicago, Ill.; Vermont; Spain; and Europe. He settled in Smithfield after his daughter Jessica’s birth in 1984, where he rebuilt his home by hand.
As a social worker, Vince devoted nearly 30 years to empowering individuals with disabilities to navigate life independently. An avid reader and nature enthusiast, he treasured his time in the woods and cherished travels with his daughter to Ireland, Montana, and Australia. Vince’s greatest joy was his grandson Jack, whom he adored and supported unconditionally.
Known for his remarkable ability to form lasting friendships, Vince valued connections with loved ones above all else. His greatest wisdom to others was to slow down and prioritize quality time with family and friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Jessica Jones Scannell; grandson, Jack Scannell Sheedy; brother, Michale Patrick Scannell, sister-in-law, Elvira Maria (Harris); and nieces and nephews May Linda, Daniel, and Theresa and their children. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous cherished family friends.
