Ruth Gunnel Angmar

HALLOWELL – Ruth Gunnel Angmar, of Hallowell, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2023 in the wonderful inpatient care of the VA Maine Hospice Services.

Ruth was born in Stockholm, Sweden and immigrated to the U.S. as a young woman. She joined and served in the U.S. Airforce where she met her husband.

She was predeceased by her son, Johan Erik Steiger.

She is survived by her daughter, Brit Evans and granddaughter, Sophie Horrocks who reside in England, her grandson, Anton Josef Steiger and daughter-in-law, Caterina Mako from New Jersey. In Sweden, she is survived by her sister, Birgit Angmar Månson, and nieces Cecilia Elisabeth Månsson and husband, Hasse, Anna Helena Månsson and husband, Pepe.

Ruth had a long and successful career while also raising two children. She was self determined and forward thinking, enjoyed her friends and was a generous and doting grandmother to her two grandchildren, Sophie and Anton. Her life-long love for art and painting blossomed after retirement and she became a prolific painter. Her favorite summer retreat was studying painting on Mohegan Island. When travel became difficult she painted local scenery and portrayed familiar scenes with affectionate detail.

Ruth was often accompanied by her beloved Rottweilers and later when she could no longer care for them, her cat Emma. She loved her building community and always expressed gratitude for their care and concern, specially for Pam’s faithful support. She will be greatly missed, yet she lives on in her artwork which she generously gifted to many who came in contact with her for any reason.

Ruth Gunnel Angmar’s remains will be laid to rest with her family in Sweden.
