Thank you for covering the primary election race between Cassie Julia and her opponent. I don’t think it is accurate to describe Julia as only a “pro-abortion” candidate, however. The nine bills that were tracked by Planned Parenthood cover a wider variety of issues related to women’s right for bodily autonomy than that. Cassie Julia will do a better job to protect such things as our ability to prosecute rapists and support doctors and nurses.

I’m an RN in Maine, and L.D. 227, the “shield law,” is an example. This passed despite Rep. White’s opposition. It protects RNs and MDs from unwarranted harassment by people from out of state (specifically, Texas), and failure to pass it would have resulted in an exodus of Maine’s highly trained compassionate professional caregivers away from participating in Maine’s maternal-child care, as in now happening in Texas where another hospital closed just this past weekend.

This would jeopardize all of us. Our healthcare system depends on a network of knowledgeable providers giving expert care. Once it goes away it is difficult to bring back.
