FARMINGTON — Bangor’s first doubles team closed the door before Monday’s boys tennis quarterfinal against Mt. Blue became too dramatic.
The Rams won 3-2 and advanced to face either second-seeded Skowhegan or seventh-seeded Lewiston in the Class A North semifinals later this week.
Bangor (9-4) led 2-1 with the No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles matches both going to three sets.
Bangor’s Graeme O’Neal and Quintin Gabe wrapped up the Rams’ victory by winning the third set to defeat Mt. Blue’s Eli Hoeft and Lincoln Tierney 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In the final match of the contest, the Cougars’ (9-4) third singles player, Tim Williamson, won the third set to beat Sam Shtenenberg 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.
Bangor took a 2-0 lead with 6-2, 6-1 by Josh Grunkemeyer in second singles and Jackson Haskell in first singles.
A two-set, 6-2, 6-2 win by Mt. Blue’s Jack Cramer and Alex Rackliff in second doubles cut the Rams’ lead to 2-1 with the final two matches going to third sets.
