You may have noticed a “for sale” sign in front of Old South Church, United Church of Christ, on Second Street in Hallowell. Some of you may have once attended church in our magnificent granite building. Others may only know it as a Hallowell landmark, seen on most old postcards and newspaper clippings.
We, the members and friends of Old South, wish to share with the community that we did not come to the decision to sell lightly. Like so many local churches, our membership is decreasing, and maintenance on this grand old building has become not only cumbersome but getting in the way of our real mission — to share the love of God and teachings of Jesus Christ with our neighbors and friends.
We will continue to be a community church, no matter what the future holds, and no matter where we end up worshiping and gathering. We are an open and affirming church with a small, but enthusiastic, group of members and friends, a vibrant pastor, a splendid music program, and an active mission and outreach program. We contribute time and money to the Hallowell Food Bank, the Bread of Life Shelter, Pilgrim Lodge, and many other local, national and international causes.
Until it is sold, we will continue to meet in the sanctuary building on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. Come join us! No matter who you are, no matter where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome.
