Matthew James Sites

ATHENS – Matthew James Sites, 56, passed away on May 30, 2024, after losing consciousness while driving in Hartland.

Matt was born March 7, 1968, in Annapolis, Maryland, to John Henry and Katherine Warren Sites. When he was 2-years-old, they moved from Cape St. Clair, Maryland, to Athens, Maine, where Matt grew up. He attended the local Athens schools and graduated from Madison High School in 1986.

Matt was a passionate athlete who played basketball and baseball throughout his youth. Following graduation from Madison, he attended the University of Maine at Orono before moving to southern Maryland in the early 1990s. Working for his father in the home-building industry, he eventually started his own business, Phase One Construction. He returned to Athens in 2011 and worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel, delivering the daily newspaper to the surrounding communities with great dedication until his untimely death.

Matt enjoyed playing disc golf, visiting the casinos, watching sporting events, playing poker and Scrabble with friends and family, and making constant improvements to his home. He was especially fond of cats and lovingly tended to the needs of his feline friends.

Matt was predeceased by his brother, James Warren Sites (1994) and his mother, Katherine “Kitty” Sites (2005). He is survived by his father, John Henry Sites of Fredericksburg, Virginia; his sister, Sarah LeBlanc and her husband, Steve, of Fairfield, Maine; his brother, Luke Sites and his wife, Allyson (née Alward), of Athens, Maine; two special aunts, Nancy Warren and Sylvia Warren; and many uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family members.
