I’d like to set the record straight on a couple of things.

I have been targeted in ads from Planned Parenthood and canvassers who were supporting my opponent that I was anti-LGBTQ. This is an outright lie. In fact, I was endorsed two years ago and again this year by distinguished members of the LGBTQ community. I did vote against L.D. 227 which is a bill highlighted by the opposition. That law allows minors to come to Maine to have gender transitioning interventions without a parent’s permission. I would vote the same way today in agreement with the unanimous opposition of the bipartisan Maine Sheriff’s Association.

The other bill that I have been attacked for not supporting is L.D. 1619. That law removes any restrictions on abortion and would allow an abortion of a healthy baby right up until moments before birth. I would vote the same way today.

I stated from the very beginning of my entry into politics when I attended the first Democratic caucus in 2018 that I was a pro-life Democrat. For me, the abortion issue has always been a human rights issue and the greatest civil rights issue of our time. I will never accept the idea that one part of the human family — the unborn — should be denied the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I am moving on to a new chapter in my life. I worked hard for all of Waterville and Maine over these past six years. I will continue to be active in my community, and my wife is thrilled we will have more free time.

Rep. Bruce White
