A Detroit man was killed early Wednesday morning when the car he was driving veered off Winnecook Road in Burnham and hit a tree, authorities said.

Paul Raye Jr., 18, was pronounced dead at the scene resulting from the crash impact, according to a news release Thursday from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash was reported at 5:13 a.m., after a Maine State Police trooper notified the Waldo County Regional Communications Center of a single-vehicle crash on Winnecook Road. Members of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police responded.

A police investigation found that Raye, driving a 2006 Saab 9-2X, veered off the road on a curve. Police cited speed as a contributing factor, but did not say how fast Raye was driving.
