We would like to respond to the opinion piece, “Beware the antiabortion ‘clinic’ in Maine,” (June 30). We were disturbed by the accusations made by Caitlin Coates because this does not agree with our knowledge of our local pregnancy support center (RESOLVE Life Center, Waterville). Because of the generalizations made, we suspect that they are not true for most centers.

We will respond to a few of the comments. To the charge of being deceptive, RESOLVE states on their website that they do not provide nor refer for abortions. They also do not profit from “any of your sexual health or pregnancy decisions.” They are committed to confidentiality.

Regarding funding for services, RESOLVE does not receive any TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) funds. Funding comes from private donations. All RESOLVE services are 100% no cost to the client.

To the generalization, “none of their staff are licensed medical professionals,” RESOLVE has RNs on staff and a medical director who is an M.D. Only RNs are used to perform ultrasounds. They have been trained and certified by a RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer). Ultrasounds are performed for pregnancy confirmation.

Besides these generalizations, Coates makes a key assumption. She assumes all women who come to a pregnancy support center want to kill their unborn baby through abortion. Actually, many do not. They would like to have their baby but need support to do so. And that is what RESOLVE does — it is committed to supporting the health and well-being of the mom, the dad, and the unborn baby.
