AUGUSTA — A Waterville man who allegedly choked a woman three times and threatened to kill her with a knife was indicted by a grand jury on several domestic violence counts at the Capital Judicial Center.

Carl A. Hunter, 30, allegedly strangled and beat a woman Feb. 16 at a Waterville hotel, causing her to temporarily lose consciousness.

He also allegedly told the woman while they were in the emergency room at Northern Light Inland Hospital in Waterville, where he had taken her after she said she was seeing stars, to tell authorities she got beat up by a black man on Water Street. And, in the registration room at the hospital, Hunter told her he had a knife and was going to kill her and her son was never going to see his mommy again, according to an affidavit filed by Waterville police Detective Riley Dowe.

The affidavit says the woman had marks and scratches on her neck as well as some bruises that appeared to be newer and some that appeared to be older.

The woman told police Hunter was her ex and he had been beating her up since Oct. 31, 2023, when he got out of prison.

Hunter was indicted by a Kennebec County grand jury July 17 on charges of domestic violence aggravated assault, domestic violence assault, domestic violence terrorizing, and domestic violence criminal threatening. The most serious charge, domestic violence aggravated assault, is a Class A offense punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
