AUGUSTA — An Augusta man was indicted on 17 counts of gross sexual assault, most involving children younger than 12 years old.
Matthew A. Greenlaw, 42, of Augusta, was initially charged by Augusta Police with a single count of dissemination of sexually explicit material. He allegedly shared a computer image Feb. 5 depicting a minor who was younger than 12 years old engaging in sexually explicit conduct.
According to an affidavit filed by Augusta Police Detective Matthew Estes, the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit received information from an undercover federal Homeland Security Investigations agent who had connected with an internet address sharing files allegedly containing sexually explicit materials that included children. The files included 98 images of adults with children estimated to be younger than 12 years old.
The internet address was traced to a Boothby Street apartment in Augusta, the affidavit states. Augusta Police obtained a search warrant and searched the apartment April 24, determining it was the residence of Greenlaw.
During the search they seized a computer from Greenlaw’s bedroom, the only computer in the residence, the affidavit states.
In July, Greenlaw was indicted by a Kennebec County grand jury on a lone count of dissemination of sexually explicit material.
A superseding indictment was issued by another Kennebec County grand jury which met Aug. 21, adding 17 counts of gross sexual assault to Greenlaw’s indictment. The indictment lists the initials of two victims, and identifies Augusta as the location of all the incidents.
Incidents involving one of the victims, who was younger than 12 years old at the time, allegedly took place between April 1, 2023, and April 23, 2024, with a total of 13 counts of gross sexual assault allegedly involving that victim.
Another four counts of gross sexual assault involve a second victim and allegedly took place between Jan. 1, 2013, and Dec. 31, 2016. The victim was younger than 12 years old when three of the incidents are alleged to have taken place, and younger than 14 years old during one of them.
Greenlaw is being held at Kennebec County jail, according to jail records.
An indictment is not a determination of guilt but indicates enough evidence exists for a case to move toward trial.
