LITCHFIELD — A Turner man died Sunday morning after his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on state Route 197 in Litchfield, officials said.
Jon W. Devoe, 29, drove his motorcycle at a high speed and crossed into the lane of an oncoming pickup truck, according to an announcement Monday from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
Devoe crashed at 8:58 a.m. into the pickup truck driven by Ryan Gibson, 34, of Bowdoin. Devoe was then trapped under the truck.
Gibson escaped the truck and, with help from a bystander, pulled Devoe from under the truck before both vehicles were engulfed in flames.
A photograph provided by the Sheriff’s Office showed a large fire at the crash scene, with flames spreading to utility wires overhead.
Devoe was declared dead at the scene, officials said.
Gibson was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Lt. Chris Read of the Sheriff’s Office.
The crash closed a portion state Route 197, also known as Richmond Road, near Percy’s Hardware Co. for about four hours.
The announcement from the Sheriff’s Office reported that a crew from Central Maine Power Co. responded to the crash scene and verified the power lines were fine, but Spectrum’s lines were reportedly damaged.
The Sheriff’s Office said no charges are pending related to the crash, which is under investigation, and the Maine State Police are reconstructing the accident.
