William “Billy” Snowden Mills

BELGRADE – It is with great sorrow that we announce that William “Billy” Snowden Mills, Sr. has departed this earth on Sept. 29, 2024, after a long battle with dementia. He was born Jan. 29, 1942, to Snowden and Rosalind (Stevens) Mills.

For most of his life he resided on Belgrade Hill in North Belgrade on the land that he and his siblings grew up on. He would often reminisce about those years. He would fondly recall going to Sunday School and memorizing John 3:16 at the church down the hill. Back in the day (early 60’s) he raced a 1940 Ford Coupe at Unity Raceway. After he got that out of his system, he pushed it out back of the house with all the other old jalopies which became the playground that his children enjoyed for quite some time

Billy will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a very hard worker. One of his first paying jobs was picking beans for Charlie Mills up the hill from his childhood home. He drove cab for a while and worked on a construction crew laying down I-95 through Waterville. He enjoyed his 24-year tenure at the Diamond Match in Oakland and at the Carleton Woolen Mill in Winthrop for 16 years. He would often be seen walking his dogs around routes 8, 11 and the Taylor Woods Road over the years. He enjoyed keeping up with current events in his community and the world, watching tv, and speaking to people on his CB radio both locally and all over the world. His “handle” was “Wild Bill”.

He was predeceased by his wife, Suzanne (Buss) Mills; his parents, Snowden and Rosalind; siblings, Roger, Joel, Ronald, Theodore, and Winifred Mills (twin to Rosalie who died at birth). He is survived by his sister, Rosalie Chase. He is also survived by his children, William Jr., Michael, Jeffrey (Karen) and Wendy Mills; as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A service to remember William will be held Sunday Oct. 6 at 2:30 p.m. located at Gospel Hall, 421 Old Belgrade Road, Augusta, Maine. Light refreshments will follow.

Arrangements are under the care of Dan and Scott’s Cremation and Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington Maine, where memories, photos and condolences may be shared at dsfuneral.com
