FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington plans to commemorate Constitution Day 2024 with its 18th annual discussion of significant past and upcoming cases before the Supreme Court.
This year’s event is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in room C23 in UMF Roberts Learning Center, 270 Main St. The free event will be presented by Jim Melcher, UMF professor of political science and pre-law advisor.
The presentation features a docket of U.S. Supreme Court cases including last term’s highlights and this term’s coming attractions.
Last Term: Trump v. U.S. (Presidential Immunity); Trump v. Anderson (On denying Donald Trump ballot access); Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo (Chevron deference); and Garland v. Cargill/U.S. v. Rahimi (Gun cases).
The coming term: Garland v. VanDerStock (“Ghost guns”); U.S. v. Skrmetti (Can states ban “gender affirming care” to minors?); Stanley v. City of Sanford, Florida: Americans with Disabilities Act; Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton (State regulation of access to sexually explicit websites); and Seven County Infrastructure Coalition v. Eagle County, Colorado (Environmental regulation).
