RICHMOND — A section of Main Street has reopened after a propane leak led emergency officials to close a mile-long stretch for about two hours Tuesday morning.

Sagadahoc County Communications, the county’s dispatch service, received a call at 6:17 a.m. about a gas leak at Acord Auto and Self Storage, near the intersection of Main Street, which is also state Route 197, and White Road. When Richmond Fire Department crews arrived on the scene, they discovered a propane tank leaking from its valve, according to a news release from the Sagadahoc County Emergency Management Agency.

The leak was quickly contained to Acord Auto and Self Storage, but part of Main Street was shut down due to the nature of the call, the news release said.

Crews closed Route 197 from the intersection of Main Street and White Road to the Exit 43 Quik Stop convenience store near Exit 43 — blocking the primary route from downtown Richmond to Interstate 295.

The cause of the leak is still under investigation, but Philip B. Davis, director of the Sagadahoc County EMA, said there is no ongoing threat to the public, and no injuries were reported.

Fire crews from Richmond, Bowdoinham, Bowdoin, Litchfield, Dresden, Pittston, Lisbon and Gardiner responded to the scene, along with the Richmond Police Department, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, the Maine Department of Transportation and the Sagadahoc County EMA.
