JAY — A New York man is accused of shooting a resident of a Church Street apartment building Tuesday morning.

Police arrested Christian Meyers, 21, of Manhattan, New York, on charges of elevated aggravated assault, aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm within 100 feet of a dwelling, reckless conduct with a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm.

Additional charges of endangering the welfare of a child and sexual abuse of a minor are part of a separate incident and not related to Tuesday’s shooting, Police Chief Joseph Sage said.

A 28-year-old man called Tuesday morning to report he had been shot in the leg by a man from an adjacent apartment building, Sage wrote in a news release. The victim was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with a single gunshot wound that was not considered lift threatening.

Officers closed down both ends of Church Street as they began investigating. Others from Jay, Wilton, Livermore Falls and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office assisted.

Meyers was found at the intersection of Bemis and Gagnon streets in Livermore Falls and arrested, Sage wrote.

The gun that was used was stolen from an unlocked vehicle in Wilton in late September, according to police.

Meyers is being held at the Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington and scheduled to make an initial appearance before a judge Wednesday.

He is to appear Dec. 3 at the Franklin County Unified Court in Farmington.

Convictions on the charges range from six months in jail to 30 years in prison.

Regional School Unit 9 in Farmington put district schools in 35-minute lockout, Superintendent Christian Elkington said.

Regional School Unit 73 Superintendent Scott Albert said schools in the Jay area were not on a lockout, and he was in constant touch with police.
