Carol M. Bernier

AUGUSTA – Carol M. Bernier, 85, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. After struggling for many years with congestive heart failure, she was no longer in any pain and in her words was “ready to get on the bus” to be greeted by the Lord along with many loved ones who have gone before her.

She was born in Augusta on May 23, 1939, a daughter of the late Clement A. and Simone F. (Grenier) LaCroix.

Carol attended Augusta schools and was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

She had been employed by the Augusta School Department and, later, Service Merchandise. She also previously worked at Gardiner Shoe, Hazzard Shoe, Truitt Brothers and Taylor Shoe.

Carol loved spending time with her friends and family, particularly with her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her home was always ready with toys for the little ones and she often passed out candy from her special candy jar. Carol enjoyed listening to music, playing cards, playing Pokeno, and going to the local casinos with the senior citizen groups and friends and family. She also took many motorcycle rides to Laconia over the years. Carol was a fabulous cook and was famous for her tourtierre pie (pork pie) and stuffing; the holiday’s were her favorite time of year.

Seeing others brought Carol much joy, and many of her friends and family were blessed to have seen Carol during her brief times of alertness before getting on the ‘bus’. She will be remembered as a positive and spunky woman who never complained and had a radiant smile.

She was predeceased by her brother, Kenneth LaCroix.

Carol is survived by her son, Scott Bernier and his wife Kim of West Bath; Sheilla M. Huard and her husband Jimmy of Bowdoinham; a sister, Linda Beane of Augusta; four grandchildren, Jesse, Amanda, Scotty and Lexie; three great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank the MaineGeneral medical team for all the care they provided to Carol.

There will be no public visiting hours. A graveside service will be held for friends and family on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

The family requests that donations in Carol’s memory be made to the American Heart Association at http://www.heart.org. Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME. Condolences, stories and photos may be shared at http://www.plummerfh.com.
