GARDINER — Michelle Tucker has secured a spot to represent Gardiner on the Maine School Administrative District 11 school board.
Tucker received 940 votes, compared to 840 for Nathan Mitchell, 477 for Marc Cone and 455 for Cullen McGough. Tucker will replace Diane Potter, who chose not to seek reelection.
Cone, 63, executive director of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Air Management Association, and McGough, 48, director of communication, IT and marketing at Chewonki, previously served on the school board. Mitchell, 33, a physical therapist, and Tucker, 45, a social service specialist, ran for the first time.
A police report was filed by the MSAD 11 school resource officer after Tucker approached two school board student representatives after the September meeting. Tucker, who has spoken out against state-mandated policies for transgender students, went up to the girls after a heated meeting. The girls — Sage Sculli and Kiera Blodgett — said the encounter scared them and left them confused as to why Tucker approached them.
Additionally, Tucker attended the public forum for the proposed school-based health center and questioned if gender-affirming care would be provided to students against the wishes of parents. The health professionals who are proposing the center said they would comply with state law.
Also elected was Barry Manning of Randolph, who ran unopposed and took the seat of Jack Pitteroff.
MSAD 11 encompasses Gardiner, West Gardiner, Pittston and Randolph. Its school board has 12 members; five are from Gardiner, three from West Gardiner and two each from Pittston and Randolph.
