HALLOWELL – Joan J. McPherson, 93, of Hallowell, formerly of Farmingdale and Augusta, Maine, died after a sudden illness on Nov. 2, 2024, at Granite Hill Estates, with her loving family at her side. Joan was born in Rumford, Maine on Nov. 23, 1930, to Arthur and Hazel (Lovejoy) Jordan.
Joan was educated in Augusta and was in the class of 1947 at Cony High School. She also attended Gates Business School. She was employed by Hall-Dale High school for 18 years until her retirement in 1984. For many years Joan was a volunteer for local Blood pressure clinics.
She was a member of the Old South Congregational Church in Hallowell for over 40 years, spending some of those years as a Sunday school teacher.
Joan and Ernie enjoyed winter vacations in Florida and out West camping with their RV. Joan was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend who brought joy and warmth into the lives of those she loved. She was happiest when surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to whom she was always their “Nan.”
Joan was predeceased by her husband of 73 years, Ernest and infant daughter Martha Ann, sisters, Priscilla Newnam and Joyce Boynton.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan and husband Francis (Skip) Parker, Jean and husband Ronald Gardiner, LeeAnne McPherson and husband David Braley, sons, James E. McPherson and Ned L. McPherson and wife Suzanne Giberson; grandsons, Sean McPherson and wife Brooke, Zachary Parker, Nathan Parker and David Gardiner and wife Courtney, granddaughters, Alison Gardiner Bates and husband Kevin, Kelly Roy Hayes and partner James Donnell, Kristy Roy Wolfington and husband Harrison; great grandsons, Noah and Benjamin Bates and Theo Gardiner, great granddaughters, Olivia McPherson, Lillyanna, Arianna, and Brianna Parker, Laurel Hayes, Olivia and Jillian Wolfington, and Everly Gardiner; step grandson Kyle Braley and step granddaughter Kristen Braley. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law; along with many nieces and nephews.
Per Joan’s request, there will be a private family graveside memorial service at a later date in Hallowell.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Nathan Murray-James and the staff at Granite Hill Estates for their loving care and support.
