Maxine (Young) Gorten

PITTSFIELD – Maxine Young Gorten, 92, passed peacefully at home on Nov. 8, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

Maxine was born in Palmyra on Oct. 26, 1932 to Jay and Mabel (Bartlett) Young. Maxine grew up in Detroit with her five sisters and was a 1951 graduate of Maine Central Institute.

In 1955, she married Ernest Robert Gorten, Jr. Together, they had three children, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. They were married for 61 years before Ernest’s death, due to complications from Parkinson’s disease in 2016.

Maxine worked for the State of Maine offices in Augusta as a secretary for 20 years. After her retirement, she served as an administrative assistant for the Maine Association of Retirees until the age of 83.

However, her family gave her the most joy. She spent many hours hosting family birthdays, gatherings and holidays, creating special memories for all of her loved ones. She never missed her grandsons’ football, hockey and baseball games and always supported her granddaughters’ musical endeavors.

Though her physical presence may be gone, Maxine leaves behind a legacy of compassion, generosity and unconditional love. She taught us the importance of family, a bond she cherished above all else. Maxine will be deeply missed as a loving friend, mother, aunt and grandmother.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest R. Gorten, Jr.; her parents; and her five sisters, Hazel Keyes, Pauline Lagarde, Doris Rosenberg, Ada Sirois and Janey Barnard.

She is survived by her three children, Linda Snow and her husband Peter of Pittsfield, Brenda Palmer and her husband Rick of Farmingdale, and Gregory Gorten of Clinton; six grandchildren, Kyle Snow and his wife Kathy of Ellsworth and Kathryn Snow of Lincolnville, Sarah Bailey and husband Eric of Maryland, Hannah Lee and her husband Anson of New Hampshire, Cory Palmer of Waterville, and Ian Palmer and fiancé Rachael Bladen of Bangor; great-grandchildren, Ari, Amos, Lilah, Ben, Olivia, Barrett, Noa, Miles; great-great-granddaughter, Sunny; along with several nieces, nephews; and extended family.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life on May 24, 2025.
