Wesley David Hussey

GORHAM – Wesley David Hussey, born Nov. 16, 1955, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at his home in Gorham on Dec. 26, 2024.

Wesley was a 1973 graduate of Winslow High School. He was a proud member of the Maine State Police, enlisting in 1978, and serving 36 years in many roles before retiring in 2014 as the Lieutenant at the Troop E barracks, after an assignment to Troop J in downeast Maine as Sergeant and then Lieutenant. He was also Commander and a founding member of the Maine State Police Incident Management Assistance Team (IMAT) of which he continued to provide support and mentorship in a volunteer capacity after his retirement until the summer of 2024.

Wes is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Evangeline; loving daughters and their husbands, Michelle and Jeff Freers of Scarborough and Sarah and Brent Crossman of Cumberland; his beloved grandchildren Jocelyn Rossi, Wesley Crossman, Amelia Rossi, Charlotte Crossman, and Ford Freers; his brother Patrick and his wife Dawn Hussey of Holly Springs, NC; his sister Rebecca and her husband John Goodrich of Vassalboro; brothers- and sisters-in law; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Frederick Knowlton Hussey, and his mother, Elaine Nelson Hussey.

Wesley led an extraordinary life and is remembered as being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and leader. Many will remember him as being extremely selfless and giving, the best of the best, and always so incredibly proud of his family.

Wes’s greatest joy was spending time with his family, and they were fortunate to have done just that during the holidays prior to his passing. He wanted to be at every one of his kids’ and then his grandkids’ games, meets, recitals, and graduations, and he always made time for his loved ones.

During his extraordinary career with the Maine State Police, he was respected by everyone. He cared deeply about his law enforcement family, and his colleagues have said that “Lieutenant Hussey made a great impact as a state trooper, his greatest impact being on those who had the privilege to work for him. He was aways the listener, always calm, always about others, and always about the trooper. A quiet leader, who intentionally tried to stay out of the limelight, he exemplified the core values of the Maine State Police in all that he did.” As one colleague put it, “There are few I respected and enjoyed working with more than Wes, just a good man in all ways, who made everyone who had the privilege to be around him better.”

His family has said simply that “there are no words that can express the extent of this loss to our family.” Although he has left us, his legacy, his guidance, and incredible example of love will live forever.

Visiting hours will be held from 9 – 11 a.m. on Jan. 5, 2025, with a Memorial Service immediately following from 11 – noon, at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland ME.
