AUGUSTA — Friends of Animals has expanded its low-cost spay/neuter program to Maine. The organization has partnered with Maine Animal Health Alliance — the first veterinary clinic in Maine to join the program — to provide affordable procedures to local pet owners.
On Monday-Tuesday, March 10-11, to celebrate this new partnership and help reduce pet overpopulation, 50 free spay/neuter certificates will be gifted to residents in need, according to a news release from John Kelley, communications assistant with Friends of Animals.
The certificates are available to those within a 25-mile radius of Maine Animal Health Alliance, 231 Old Belgrade Road, and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Certificates cover the cost of a routine spay/neuter procedure, including a cursory surgical pre-exam, anesthesia, surgery, waste disposal, day of surgery post-operative care and pain relief, hospitalization as required and stitch removal if necessary.
To request a certificate, call 1-800-321-PETS from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 10 and 11.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
