On Friday morning, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky entered the Oval Office, where he was scheduled to sign a minerals deal with the United States that might have helped end the war with Russia.
That didn’t happen. Instead, Zelensky got into a heated exchange in front of reporters with President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who spent much of the conversation speaking over Zelensky, demanding his gratitude.
Some in Maine’s congressional delegation described the event Friday as “unfortunate,” “disturbing” and “embarrassing.” Rep. Jared Golden, D-2nd District, declined to comment on what his office called “a serious and challenging situation.”
Read their statements below:
Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine
“The deterioration of the discussion among President Trump, Vice President Vance, and President Zelensky was very unfortunate given how high the stakes are. I hope that they will reconvene and hold a more productive meeting to advance the cause of a just and lasting peace for the people of Ukraine, who have been so brutally attacked by Vladimir Putin.”
Sen. Angus King, I-Maine
King said what he saw Friday was “disturbing.”
After watching the entire video, he noted that his meetings with Zelensky “have always begun with profound and heartfelt thanks for our support,” contradicting Vance’s allegations that Ukraine was ungrateful.
“Secondly, if you listen carefully, the point that Zelensky was trying make is that, based on history, Russia cannot be trusted to honor its commitments and therefore any deal must include some form of security guarantee to insure the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Unfortunately, our president insisted on talking over this point and refused to acknowledge it.
“I hope this unfortunate meeting will not detract from the pursuit of an agreement that ends the bloodshed, recognizes and protects the sovereignty of Ukraine without appeasing the territorial ambitions of a murderous dictator.”
Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st District
“What Americans and the world watched unfold today in the Oval Office was disgraceful and completely embarrassing for the United States. Lecturing President Zelensky about the war in his own country — a war that has killed over 43,000 Ukrainians and wounded over 370,000 so far — shows the administration’s amateurish approach to diplomacy. Especially with Secretary (of State Marco) Rubio sitting in silence on the sideline. President Zelensky has bravely led his country in resisting and fighting against Russia’s onslaught since Putin invaded Ukraine. Americans have more in common with those who resist aggression than those who perpetuate it on self-determined peoples.”
Rep. Jared Golden, D-2nd District
Through his office, Golden declined to comment.
“The congressman is aware of the events in the Oval Office today but will not be making a comment at this time. This is a serious and challenging situation, and it deserves more than a rushed statement for the press.”
