HALLOWELL — Owen Kirk had a hat trick for the Messalonskee boys hockey team Monday as the Eagles skated to a 14-1 victory over Winslow/Gardiner/Waterville at the Camden National Bank Ice Vault.
Messalonskee put WGW (0-2) on notice from the opening puck drop, firing two shots on net in the first 10 seconds. Just 57 seconds in, the Eagles took the lead as Garrett Card fired a rocket of a shot past Tigers’ goalie Aiden Paradis on an assist from Tatum Doucette to make it 1-0.
Shortly after Messalonskee (2-0) killed a penalty for too many men on the ice, the Eagles made it 2-0 on an Andrew Beckwith goal at 6:22. Messalonskee scored a power-play goal from Tyler Hansen at 8:03 before Denny Martin scored the Eagles’ fourth at 10:36 to cap off a dominant opening period.
“Our message (we wanted to send) was we’re a really good team, at least I think we are, and we come out and execute, we show it,” Kirk said. “We’re a fast team, and we wanted to set the tone and put some shots on right away.”
Messalonskee was even more ruthless in the second period, setting the tone again 13 seconds in on an unassisted goal by Hansen. Kirk (2:55, 8:03), Liam McFadden (5:09), Beckwith (11:26) and Christian Salvadori (12:39) piled on in a six-goal period as the Eagles put the game in running time.
Kirk completed his hat trick at 2:30 in the third period before goals from Martin and Logan Baron made it 13-0. Jack Stewart put the Tigers on the board at 12:30 before Martin scored his second with 30 seconds remaining to round out the scoring.
Messalonskee had 54 shots on goal to WGW’s six. The Eagles have now scored 22 goals in their first two games after defeating Presque Isle 8-1 on Saturday.
