In my younger and less discerning years I supported the eradication of the Electoral College. I reasoned that in a democracy the majority vote should rule. After being involved in several election cycles I have adjusted my stance to realize that the Founding Fathers were very astute when they created the electoral method.

As I matured as an educated voter it was apparent that this nation is a Democratic Republic and not simply a democracy. The United States of America is a nation of individual states with different cultures, thoughts and preferences and that if one of those simply because of population growth could control all the others we would have discord and division instead of unity. The Electoral College is designed to create unity rather than domineering and division. To eradicate the Electoral College would create all sorts of divisions. State against state, cities against rural, and racial divisions along with a host of other divisions.

The beauty of America is the melting pot where all people are created equal and given the same opportunities to be heard when it comes to selecting a president. In the discussion of electoral vs. popular vote education and maturity are the essential elements, Do we want a united country or a divided one based upon us vs. them? United we stand, but divided we will fall!
