WATERVILLE — Another car wash is planned for Kennedy Memorial Drive, just west of Taco Bell and near Interstate 95, in Waterville.
Washville, which bills itself as the largest express operation of car washes in Maine, plans to begin construction in early 2025, according to Jim Waterman, the company’s executive vice president who addressed the Waterville Planning Board on Tuesday night.
“We’re typically around a seven- to nine-month turnaround, from shovel in the ground to completion,” Waterman said.
The Planning Board approved final plans for the car wash, to be built at 460 Kennedy Memorial Drive, on land to be leased from Marden’s Surplus & Salvage, whose store is located to the south of the car wash lot.
Washville has five car washes in Maine and three others being developed, including the one in Waterville, Waterman said. The business began about five years ago on Long Island, New York, and moved into New England about 2 1/2 years ago, he said.
Waterman said the company seeks to be a good steward of each community in which it has a car wash, including becoming a member of the chamber of commerce. Washville also supports community recreation programs and gives to charities, he said.
The goal is to have customers be able to enter and exit the car wash property easily and safely, Waterman said.
Motorists will be encouraged to enter the property at the main entrance to Marden’s, at the traffic lights on Kennedy Memorial Drive, according to Waterman.
He acknowledged there is another car wash — the Golden Nozzle Car Wash at 340 Kennedy Memorial Drive — that is busy, and said building Washville should help alleviate issues with traffic backing up there. He said many people have asked that a Washville, which offers free vacuum service, be opened in Waterville.
“We felt like this was a good opportunity, that there was enough market share for both operations to do well and this would help maybe mitigate some of the traffic concerns that exist there today,” Waterman said.
City Planner Ann Beverage said Wednesday the Planning Board voted 5-0 to approve final plans for the car wash.
Board member April Chiriboga was absent from Tuesday’s meeting. Two board members, Hilary Koch and Matt Boulerice, resigned from the board recently and Heath Dunn was appointed to replace Koch, according to Beverage. She said Mayor Mike Morris has yet to appoint Boulerice’s successor.
