PALMYRA — Two people were being held in jail on drug trafficking charges after police conducted a further search of a residence on Madawaska Road in Palmyra, authorities said Tuesday.
The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the residence on Wednesday, Sept. 11, around 7:30 a.m., Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster said in a statement issued Tuesday. The Sheriff’s Office previously executed a search warrant at the same property on Aug. 29, arresting a Massachusetts man, according to information previously released.
The second search on Sept. 11 resulted in two arrests, Lancaster said.
Jennifer Hight, 46, of Palmyra, has been charged with one Class A count of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs and two misdemeanor counts of violating condition of release, as well as outstanding warrants for past charges of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, according to Lancaster.
Jamie Ramsdell, 43, of Palmyra has also been charged with Class A aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, Lancaster said. At the time of his arrest, Ramsdell was on probation for a previous conviction for unlawful furnishing of scheduled drugs, so his probation officer has placed a probation hold on him, the sheriff said.
Hight and Ramsdell were hiding inside the home when a team of three detectives and two patrol deputies executed the search warrant, according to Lancaster.
Both were being held as of Tuesday at the Somerset County Jail in Madison, records show. The two are due back in a Skowhegan courtroom on Dec. 18.
Hight’s bail is set at $5,000 cash for the drug trafficking charges, Lancaster said. Ramsdell’s bail is also set at $5,000 cash, but no bail is allowed on the probation hold, he said.
The search warrant was obtained as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected drug trafficking at the property.
“The second search warrant was an attempt to arrest two other individuals alleged to have been involved in illicit drug trafficking activities, relating to the (Aug. 29) search warrant execution,” Lancaster said in his statement.
In the first search, Sheriff’s Office investigators said they found a kilogram of cocaine, a large amount of fentanyl, a loaded 9 mm pistol with serial numbers ground off, $2,700 from the suspected sale of illicit drugs and other drug-related items and documentation.
The drugs had an estimated street value of about $100,000, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Four people fled on foot, but were all stopped by police.
Kasiem D. Smith, 29, of Worcester, Massachusetts, was arrested and charged with one Class A count of aggravated trafficking in a schedule W drug, one Class C count of criminal simulation, and one Class C count of possession of scheduled drugs, Lancaster said then.
Smith has since posted his cash bail, set at $50,000, and was released from the county jail, Lancaster said Tuesday. Smith’s bail was originally set at $250,000, according to Lancaster’s Aug. 29 statement regarding his arrest.
Detective David Cole is the primary investigator in the case.
