AUGUSTA — A Vassalboro man was sentenced to serve six months in prison on a four-year suspended sentence on domestic violence-related charges, though several other similar charges were dismissed by the state.

Jeremy R. French, 46, pleaded guilty to two counts of violating conditions of release and one count each of domestic violence assault and domestic violence stalking.

The prosecution said that between Jan. 1, 2023, and Nov. 1, 2023, French assaulted and stalked a woman with whom he was in a relationship.

On June 21 of this year, French, while on bail on a since-dismissed charge of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, violated a bail condition that he not have contact with the woman. The prosecution said French went to her residence and knocked on her door, waking her up.

Security camera footage showed French at the door to the woman’s Vassalboro residence, according to Amanda Seekins, an assistant district attorney. French later admitted to police he had been at the residence.

French was jailed for that incident. And while in jail between July 31 and Aug. 13 and still prohibited from having contact with the female victim, he called the woman from a telephone at the jail, making about 100 phone calls, 60 of which connected.

Seekins said the county domestic violence investigator listened to French’s jail telephone calls and determined he had made numerous calls to the woman.

The two violating conditions of release charges were Class C charges, punishable by up to five years in prison.

French was sentenced to four years in prison, with all but six months suspended, and two years of probation. That means he is expected to serve six months behind bars, but if he violates the conditions of his probation, he could face the remaining time on the full four-year sentence.

The plea agreement in the case dismissed three domestic violence assault charges, one assault charge, two domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon charges, one domestic violence terrorizing with a dangerous weapon charge, two other violating conditions of release charges and three other violating protection order charges.

The indictment on the since-dismissed domestic violence terrorizing with a dangerous weapon charge alleged French used a firearm to threaten the victim’s life.

Jake Demosthenes, an assistant district attorney, said the victim in the case was informed of the plea agreement before Wednesday’s hearing at the Capital Judicial Center in Augusta. She had a “neutral” opinion of the deal, Demosthenes said, and did not wish to speak to the matter in court.

French has already served about 100 days in jail, according to his lawyer, Walter McKee of Augusta.
