After a standout career at the University of Maine, John Huard was a fifth-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos, then a member of the American Football League, in 1967. Huard played with the Broncos from 1967-69, and the New Orleans Saints in 1971.

Huard, who was a senior on that team, played for the University of Maine before he was selected by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round of what was then the American Football League draft in 1967. Huard played three seasons for the Broncos and later another with the New Orleans Saints. He also would go on to coach at UMaine under Walt Abbott.
