SKOWHEGAN — Main Street Skowhegan will kick off the holiday season Saturday with #ShopSmall Week and then conclude it with a SKOW-Whoville celebration.
#ShopSmall Week is an extension of the promotion that Main Street Skowhegan typically does each November for Small Business Saturday.
Three-dozen businesses are participating this year, each offering different discounts or incentives to shoppers. This includes shops like Russakoff Jewelers, The Bankery & Skowhegan Fleuriste, and the Hight Family of Dealerships.
With every purchase made at participating businesses, shoppers can enter to win one of two $100 gift cards or two $50 gift cards to their locally owned business of choice.
“We are excited to again highlight Skowhegan as a destination for the holidays,” said Kristina Cannon, executive director of Main Street Skowhegan. “The events we have planned for the next few weeks are designed to bring people to Skowhegan to shop, eat, drink, recreate and be merry.”
As #ShopSmall Week winds down, holiday festivities will kick into high gear with the return of SKOW-Whoville, Skowhegan’s ode to Dr. Seuss’ classic Grinch tale, supported by Maine Roof Solutions.
On Dec. 3, Spotlight Cinemas at The Strand will feature a free showing of the 2018 film “The Grinch.” There will also be a parade downtown that day.
Festivities wind down Dec. 4 with a Grinch-themed scavenger hunt in search of the Grinch’s heart.
Other Grinch-themed events will be offered the same day at Coburn Park, including bowling, ornament-making and a story walk.
“With three-dozen businesses participating in #ShopSmall Week and nearly two-dozen sponsors and a dozen or more volunteers supporting the return of the Grinch to Skowhegan during SKOW-WhoVille, the holidays are full of community pride and holiday cheer and we couldn’t be happier to be part of it,” Cannon said.
